$1,095 towards $1,000

I work for an organization - Caring People Alliance - whose mission is "to reduce poverty and injustice by providing high quality services that nurture positive child and youth development, stable families across the life cycle, and thriving communities."

This year, all money raised during Caring People Alliance's Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign is going directly to my program: Caring Paws.

Caring Paws is a humane education program located at RW Brown Community Center in North Philadelphia. We have a small zoo with a variety of animals (currently 5 rabbits, 5 guinea pigs, and 2 pet rats), as well as a science room with turtles (3 red-eared sliders), fish, hissing cockroaches, millipedes, and worms. (Photos of all of our furry friends are below.)

Everyone who attends the center (toddlers in daycare, children in preK, youth in the afterschool Boys and Girls Club and summer camp, and teens) can participate.

Youth gain experience with the animals by holding, petting, feeding, and playing with them. Youth may also assist with cleaning, making enrichment, and other tasks related to animal care. Through their participation in Caring Paws, youth learn about animals’ needs and responsible pet ownership, in addition to developing compassion and empathy for the animals (all animals - even the creepy crawly ones). For many of the youth, spending time with animals is therapeutic. Youth gain confidence and a sense of ownership and responsibility. The list of benefits for kids is long.

The animals benefit, too. Most of the animals are rescues from situations where they cannot receive adequate care.

We want to grow the program so that more people can participate. (Caring People Alliance has two other centers with programming for kids and older adults.) To do this, I need full time staff.

I'm also always working to improve the program and make it better for everyone. I want to bring in new and different animals. I need to make sure that we have a fund for vet emergencies, and that the animals can get more routine vet care (more frequent well visits). I want to be able to give the animals better bedding and more varied vegetables to eat. Etc. Etc.

Any size donation will make a difference.

Thank you.
